Devajit bhuyan, know about his literary life

Devajit Bhuyan, Bi-lingual poet and author from Assam was born in the historical town Tezpur, Assam, India on 1st August 1961.  The story of Devajit Bhuyan cannot be separated from the land that shaped him. Assam—cradled by the mighty Brahmaputra, river Kolong and Kapili, flowing by the side of his ancestors’ place Jungal Balahu Garh in central Assam, layered with centuries of Ahom governance, Vaishnavite reform by Sri Sankardeva, colonial disruption, and post-Independence transformation—forms not merely the backdrop but the living pulse of his intellectual journey.

Born into an Assamese family with DNA linkage to cultural and religious icon of Assam, Sri Sankardeva, Devajit Bhuyan is deeply aware of the region’s cultural legacy, Bhuyan grew up amidst conversations about history, identity, language, and literature. The villages and towns of Assam, with their Naamghars, Bihu celebrations, and oral traditions, offered him an early education that extended beyond textbooks. The rhythm of rural life, the layered memory of Ahom valour, and the continuing negotiation between tradition and modernity became formative influences. 

Even as a child, he showed unusual curiosity. While others memorized lessons, he questioned them. Why did Assam’s history often appear as a footnote in national narratives? Why were regional voices underrepresented in mainstream discourse? These questions would later evolve into a lifelong intellectual pursuit. After completion of his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, he joined the corporate life in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) as an electrical engineer. Subsequently he acquired LL.B. degree and Diploma in Management and became a fellow of the Institution of Engineer (India). Bhuyan’s formal education strengthened his natural curiosity. Immersed in the physics, mathematics, humanities and social sciences, he developed a disciplined approach to research and analysis. He studied not merely events, but structures—political systems, cultural transitions, linguistic evolution, and identity formation. Rather than adopting a purely academic tone, being an electrical engineer, Bhuyan gradually formed a distinctive voice—one that sought to communicate scholarship to ordinary readers. He believed that literature, poetry, history should not remain confined within university departments; it should circulate among the people whose lives it shapes.

At the core of Bhuyan’s work lies a deep concern for cultural preservation and intellectual self-awareness. He believes that societies without historical literacy, poetry, science & technology and critical thinking are vulnerable to distortion and fragmentation.

His intellectual commitments include:

       Assam’s identity, he argues, must be studied in its own      context—geographical, cultural, and political.
2. Bridging      Scholarship and Society
       Academic research should not alienate common readers. Knowledge must      circulate beyond institutions.

       Historical narratives must avoid ideological extremes and instead rely on      evidence-based interpretation.
4. Language      as Cultural Memory
       Assamese language, literature, and folklore are not merely artistic      expressions but repositories of collective experience.

During the last 30 years, he has authored more than 80 books published by twelve different publishers in 45 languages, English and Assamese being the core languages of his writings.  His total published books in all the languages counts to 274 and growing every year. He is the only Assamese writer whose books are translated to 45 important international languages of the world and books are available throughout the world.   His writings are part of textbook for class-X in Assam under Board of Secondary Education. Out of his published books about 40 are Assamese poetry books, 30 are English poetry books and 4 are for children and about 10 are on different subjects. Devajit Bhuyan’s poetry covers everything available in our planet earth and visible under the sun. He has composed poetry from human to animals to stars to galaxies to oceans to forests to humanity to war to technology to machines and every available material and abstract things, but his emphasis is always on Assam, Assamese people and its culture, heritage and value system. He was awarded poet of the year for 2022, 2023 at Kolkata Literary Carnival and best author for reference book of the year at Kolkata Literary Carnival 2026. He was also honoured at India International Centre for his efforts to preserve Kaziranga national park and Manas Tiger Park through animation film. He is the only poet in India, who released highest numbers of poetry books, 34 poetry books in a single day, single function. He had also composed one poetry book in one night and one poetry book during the day after great Assamese sage Sri Sankardeva. He has also published 5 poetry books in Assamese without using any Kar (vowels) following the style of famous poem Karatala Kamala, composed by Sri Sankardeva.

His books were displayed at Sharjah, Istanbul and Frankfurt book fairs in addition to different book fairs in India.
